About the project

The way...

... leading out of institutions...

... currently ends here.
This website contains the outcome of a four-months long journalistic investigation, conducted mostly undercover in ten institutions for adults with intellectual disabilities or mental illnesses in Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia.
As a fellow of the Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence in 2009, the author, Yana Buhrer Tavanier, uncovered evidence of human rights abuses, inhuman and degrading treatment and appalling neglect.
The shorter or longer English versions of the investigation, as well as the Bulgarian version, are free for republication, in case the author is quoted, and the following is mentioned: This article was produced as part of the Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence, an initiative of the Robert Bosch Stiftung and ERSTE Foundation, in cooperation with the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network, BIRN.

The Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence programme has been initiated in 2007 by the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the ERSTE Foundation, in cooperation with the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network – in order to “encourage regional networking among journalists and advance balanced coverage on topics that are central to the region as well as to the European Union”.
The 2009 Balkan Fellowship topic was “Identity“.
